A grain, gently woken
A dry grain is a seed holding its breath. Give it moisture, warmth and time, and it begins to live — and everything about it changes in a baby's favour.
As the sprout wakes, natural enzymes begin working on the grain from the inside. Complex starches start simplifying, which is why sprouted porridge tastes rounder and sits lighter. Phytic acid — a compound that binds minerals like iron, calcium and zinc — reduces during sprouting, so the minerals naturally present in the grain are easier for a small body to take up.
None of this needs machines or additives. It needs muslin cloth, clean water, and the patience to wait two days. That is the whole secret — it just doesn't scale to factory speed, which is why most cereals skip it and why we never will.
Inside a sprouting grain
Hour 0Whole grain is washed and soaked. The seed drinks, softens, stirs.
Hour 12Spread on damp muslin. Enzymes activate; the grain begins to breathe.
Hour 24Starches begin simplifying. Phytic acid starts falling away.
Hour 48A tiny white sprout shows. The grain is at its gentlest — we stop here and dry it slowly.
